Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about readiness, lessons, packages, bikes, rentals, weather, cancellations and individualized support.
The general starting age is approximately 4.5, but readiness matters more than a birthday. Riders should be able to walk independently and follow basic safety directions. For a child under 4.5, request guidance before booking so we can recommend an appropriate starting point.
Most children typically learn in two to three lessons, and some learn in one. Every rider is different, so this is not a guarantee. We recommend the two-lesson package for most new riders because it creates time to build balance and then reinforce braking, turning, control and safety.
No responsible instructor can guarantee an exact outcome or timeline. We can promise a structured, encouraging process that adapts to the individual rider, identifies what is blocking progress and builds skills in manageable steps.
Removing the pedals lets the rider focus on gliding and balance before adding the complexity of pedaling. With feet flat on the ground, children often feel safer, take more appropriate risks and build the foundation needed for steering, braking and pedaling.
Bring a correctly sized bike, helmet, water and the bike’s pedals. The seat should be lowered so both feet are flat on the ground with the knees slightly bent. If you cannot remove the pedals, an instructor can help, but that time comes from the scheduled lesson.
Bike rentals are $25 and are available in Teaneck, Cresskill and at travel events, subject to the rider’s size and current inventory. Child height should be provided during booking so the team can confirm fit.
Yes. Fear, perfectionism and previous unsuccessful attempts are common reasons families contact Ready to Pedal. Instructors use manageable goals, calm coaching, games and individualized pacing to build confidence without unnecessary pressure.
One-on-one lessons can adapt pacing, language, demonstrations, repetition, breaks and progression for many riders with ADHD, autism, sensory differences, motor-planning or coordination challenges, developmental delays or low muscle tone. A diagnosis alone does not determine eligibility. Request a consultation when significant behavioral, safety, physical or communication needs may affect participation.
A parent or responsible adult should plan to remain available for the lesson unless Ready to Pedal has provided different instructions for a specific program or event.
Ready to Pedal does not typically travel to individual homes for private lessons. Families in an area that is not currently served can ask about organizing a travel event, which generally requires enough demand for a concentrated two-day schedule and help identifying a safe paved location.
Lessons may continue in a light drizzle. Ready to Pedal may cancel or reschedule when weather or riding conditions are unsafe. If Ready to Pedal cancels, families may reschedule without charge or receive a refund. Event communication may also be sent by text or a dedicated WhatsApp group.
More than 48 hours before a lesson, families may cancel for a full refund or reschedule without charge. A cancellation or rescheduling request 24–48 hours before a lesson carries a $75 fee. Less than 24 hours before a lesson, or a no-show, is nonrefundable and cannot be rescheduled.
Remaining lesson time can be used to strengthen braking, turning, obstacle navigation, control, confidence and safer independent riding. Package transfer and expiration details should be confirmed in the current booking terms before purchase.
Ready to Pedal creates a program around the group’s ages, current riding skills, number of riders, location, available paved space, goals and preferred dates. Schools and PTAs can also host individual lesson events and may receive a percentage of generated lesson revenue as a fundraiser.
