6 Tips for Choosing the Right Bike Size for Your Child

Six practical bike-fit checks that can make learning safer, calmer and more successful.

A bike that is too large can make learning feel frightening and unstable. A bike that fits gives the child more control and makes the balance-first process easier.

Start with feet flat on the ground

For a learn-to-ride lesson, lower the seat until both feet can rest flat with the knees slightly bent. This allows the child to stop safely and push into a glide.

Do not size up for future growth

A bike the child will “grow into” may be economical later but can slow learning now. Confidence and control matter more than maximizing the number of seasons a bike may fit.

Check reach and brake access

The rider should reach the handlebars without locking the elbows and operate the brakes comfortably. If you are renting from Ready to Pedal, provide the child’s height during booking so the team can prepare the closest available size.
